The Byron Bay Writers Festival had its beginnings in 1997, when a small group of locals, wondered whether authors might accept an invitation to spend a winter’s weekend in Byron Bay. They did, and an audience of two hundred locals enjoyed a gathering of fifty Australian writers.
The festival takes place over three days in early August and includes everything from dinners and lunches to interviews and panel discussions, all set in the wonderful surrounds of Byron Bay. The Byron Bay Writers Festival is renowned for its stimulating program, its charm, and distinctly relaxed ambience. Please visit the Byron Writers Festival web site for more information.
The festival has grown from a single venue event to fill four huge marquees and venues around town and sells 45,000 individual tickets. The guest list now numbers more than one hundred and over the years the most significant and respected contemporary Australian writers have participated.
Fundamentally, the festival provides a forum for intelligent discussion and guests are invited to address the issues that matter to them as writers and which necessarily concern us all. It is a celebration of the vitality of thought and creativity with a healthy emphasis on fun.
The Byron Bay Writers Festival is held at North Byron Events. North Byron Events can be found in the Arts & Industrial Estate at the end of Bayshore Drive.
There are a couple of ways to get to the Byron Bay Writers Festival. Attendees can park at the Butler Street reserve and then catch a shuttle to the festival (there is an additional charge for taking the shuttle). Festival attendees can also drive to the festival, but parking is limited and based on a first-come first-serve basis. An approximate $5 charge is required for parking onsite.
